If you search for Lexis AI pricing you will find a lot of confident numbers and very few sources. That is not because LexisNexis is secretive about money in general. It publishes a detailed transactional price schedule and runs a store that prints monthly prices for small firms. The AI tier is the one line it leaves blank. Knowing exactly which numbers are published, and what each one actually prices, is most of what you need before a sales call.
How much does Lexis+ AI cost?
LexisNexis does not publish a subscription price for its generative AI product. The closest thing to a public rate card is its online store for law firms with one to three attorneys, which we rendered on 14 September 2026. It shows four Lexis+ plans with prices and a fifth tile, Lexis+ with Protégé, marked "Pricing on request". The store's own FAQ says Protégé "includes all of Lexis+ and integrates generative AI" and asks you to call 888-AT-LEXIS.
Here is what the store printed for one attorney, with no jurisdiction selected and the three year term that loads by default. The struck through figure beside each price is the one year rate.
| Plan | What the store says it includes | 1 year / month | 3 years / month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Lexis+ research and analytics, state caselaw and court documents | $152 | $114 |
| Enhanced | Essential plus federal caselaw, guidance, verdicts and forms | $342 | $257 |
| Professional (marked Most Popular) | Enhanced plus 50 state caselaw, Law360 and CourtLink | $432 | $324 |
| Deluxe Transactional | Drafting suite with Create+, forms, templates and guidance | $289 | $217 |
| Lexis+ with Protégé | All of Lexis+ plus generative AI | Pricing on request | Pricing on request |
Source: store.lexisnexis.com/lawfirms, rendered in a browser on 14 September 2026 (the page loads its prices with JavaScript, so a plain fetch or most archive captures show only "Loading"). The store says the promo prices are for new customers only and that firms needing more than three seats should contact sales.
Is Lexis+ AI $99 per search?
Only if you are using it outside your subscription. The $99 figure comes from a genuine LexisNexis document, the "Law Firm Per Search Pricing" price schedule, effective December 5, 2023 and still the live version on lexisnexis.com when we read it. Its header describes the contents as transactional list prices and says, word for word, that "these prices will not affect the price of your flat rate subscription but do apply to Materials used outside of your subscription."
Inside that schedule is a section headed Lexis+ AI with six line items:
| Lexis+ AI line item | List price, each | What it means for a subscriber |
|---|---|---|
| Generative AI Ask | $99 | Charged only for use outside the plan |
| Generative AI Summarize | $250 | Same |
| Generative AI Drafting | $250 | Same |
| Generative AI Document Upload and Ask | $12 | Same |
| Generative AI Document Upload and Summarize | $250 | Same |
| Generative AI Non-Supported Prompt | $0 | No charge |
Several pricing roundups present these as what Lexis+ AI costs, and one June 2025 industry briefing summarized the Lexis position as "USD 99 per Gen-AI-Ask". Read the header and the picture changes: these are the prices of a single action for someone without a plan that covers it, set before any discount. Nobody buying a seat is paying $99 per question. They matter for a different reason, covered below.
What is the difference between Lexis+ and Lexis+ with Protégé?
Lexis+ is the research subscription: caselaw, statutes, Shepard's citations, brief analysis, litigation analytics, sold in the four plans in the first table. Lexis+ with Protégé is the same research product with the generative AI assistant built in. The store's FAQ puts it in one line: Lexis+ with Protégé "includes all of Lexis+ and integrates generative AI." That is the tier people mean when they search for Lexis AI, and it is the one without a price.
One number that circulates for Protégé deserves a warning. At least one roundup gives the bundle as "$128 to $494 per user per month". Those two figures match, to the dollar, the three year Essential and Professional prices the same store showed in a January 2026 capture with Alaska selected as the jurisdiction. Neither of those plans includes Protégé. It looks like a state specific price for the research plans has been relabeled as the AI tier.
Is Lexis+ AI cheaper than CoCounsel?
Public information cannot answer that, and the reason is one sided. Thomson Reuters runs a live pricing configurator on its sales site. Read again on 14 September 2026 in the law firm segment, CoCounsel Essentials showed $360.00 a month list and $292.50 a month on the default three year plan, unchanged from our first reading on 9 September. LexisNexis prints nothing for the equivalent AI tier. So you can compare a published CoCounsel floor against a Lexis quote, but not against a Lexis price.
| Question a buyer asks | LexisNexis | Thomson Reuters |
|---|---|---|
| Published price for the AI tier | None. Protégé is "Pricing on request" | CoCounsel Essentials $360.00 list, $292.50 on 3 years |
| Published price for the flagship | None | None for CoCounsel Legal |
| Research plus AI bundle | Not priced | Westlaw Advantage with CoCounsel Essentials $639.20 list, $519.35 on 3 years |
| Three year discount | 25% (store, research plans) | 18.75%, identical across three bundles |
| Self serve purchase | Research plans only, 1 to 3 attorneys | Configurator with checkout |
| Out of plan AI charges published | Yes, $0 to $250 per action | None shown in the configurator |
The fuller Thomson Reuters picture, including the Westlaw and Practical Law bundles and why the step between them is mostly content rather than AI, is in our CoCounsel pricing breakdown.
How much is the LexisNexis multi year discount?
The store prints it: 10 percent off for a two year term and 25 percent off for three. The arithmetic checks on every plan. Essential goes from $152 to $114, which is exactly 75 percent of the one year price. Thomson Reuters takes a flat 18.75 percent off its three year CoCounsel plans. On the products each vendor prices in public, Lexis gives the deeper term discount.
That matters in a negotiation even though Protégé is quoted privately. A rep who offers you a "special" three year reduction of around a quarter is offering the published store discount. The real movers are elsewhere: jurisdiction scope, the seat definition, which content packages ride along, and the renewal cap.
Does Lexis+ price vary by state?
Yes. The store will not show packages until it knows your jurisdiction, and the prices move with it. The default view we read in September 2026 showed Professional at $324 a month on three years. The January 2026 Alaska capture showed Professional at $494. So any Lexis+ figure you read online is the price for one state, one attorney count and one term, and quoting it as a national rate is a mistake worth avoiding in a budget memo.
Why the per prompt price schedule still matters to you
Because it tells you what happens at the edge of your contract. The schedule applies to materials used outside the subscription, so the questions to settle before signature are practical ones. Which AI actions does our plan include? What happens when an associate uses one that is not included? Is there a monthly commitment the overage draws down, or does it bill on top?
The same document also shows how Lexis thinks about volume. Its marginal discount ladder starts at zero under $10,000 a month of transactional charges and reaches 17.5 percent above $180,000 a month. A small firm on list prices pays the full $250 for a drafting action that falls outside its plan. If your contract does leave a usage line open, route it into something that watches it in real time, such as a spend monitoring tool that sends budget alerts the day a threshold is crossed, rather than discovering it on the monthly invoice.
Which one should a small or mid size firm buy?
Start from the bottleneck, not the brand. If your constraint is authority, meaning finding and checking the law, the choice is really Westlaw or Lexis, and the AI assistant is an upgrade to a research library you already rely on. Stay with the library your team knows and make the vendor quote the AI tier against a competitor's published number. Our guide to legal research software covers the full field, including the free and bar association options.
If your constraint is the file, research AI is the wrong purchase at a research seat price. Plaintiff, family and general litigation practices lose most of their hours to assembling demands, keeping chronologies current and recalculating dates when something moves. That is matter work, and it is what Caseagent does: the agent reads the case file, drafts from it with citations back to the source page, and tracks the deadlines, on a flat subscription per firm rather than per user. A sensible split is one research seat for the lawyer who briefs, and the matter tool for everyone who works the file.
If you are also weighing the enterprise names, the quote only pattern is the same further up the market: see Harvey AI pricing for where the most quoted per seat figure really comes from, and Legora pricing for the vendor that has started metering its agent.
Five questions to put to LexisNexis before you sign
- Which Protégé actions are inside the plan? Get the list in writing, mapped to the price schedule's line items, so an Ask, a Summarize and a Drafting action are each either covered or priced.
- What does out of plan use cost us, net of discount? The schedule gives list prices before any discount. Ask what your rate is.
- Who counts as an attorney seat? The store defines it as anyone who provides billable services or holds a legal advisory role, which can pull in more people than your partner count.
- Can we cancel or transfer early? The store's own FAQ answers both with "contact our support team", so settle it before signing a three year term.
- What is the renewal cap? Free to ask for at signature and very hard to get at renewal.
