Westlaw Cost Per Month for Solo and Small Law Firms in 2026

Westlaw Advantage with all states and federal coverage costs a one attorney firm $551.20 a month at list and $447.85 a month on a three year term, which is $5,374 a year. Single circuit coverage costs less. The number moves with attorney count and term, and renewals are where the discount ends.

How much does Westlaw cost per month?

For a one attorney firm, Thomson Reuters shows Westlaw Advantage with All States and Federal coverage at $551.20 a month on its online configurator, or $447.85 a month on a three year term. That is $6,614 a year at list and $5,374 a year if you commit for thirty six months. Online pricing runs for firms of up to ten attorneys. Larger firms go through sales.

We read the configurator on November 4, 2026, law firm segment, one attorney selected. Treat these as the starting point for your own quote, because the number moves with attorney count, jurisdiction and term, and Thomson Reuters can change it without notice.

Westlaw product, one attorney Monthly at list Monthly on a 3 year term Yearly on a 3 year term
Westlaw Advantage, All States and Federal $551.20 $447.85 $5,374.20
CoCounsel Essentials (AI assistant only) $360.00 $292.50 $3,510.00

The Advantage tier includes primary law for all states and federal courts, KeyCite, the Key Number System and headnotes, plus Deep Research, the Litigation Document Analyzer, Complaint Analyzer, Claims Explorer and AI Jurisdictional Surveys. CoCounsel Essentials is the AI assistant without that content, which is why it costs less.

How much does Westlaw cost for a solo practitioner?

A solo with all states coverage should expect about $450 to $550 a month for Westlaw Advantage, depending on term, based on the configurator above. The same page also says Advantage starts at $256.75 a month for single circuit coverage and $399.75 for all states and federal. We could not reproduce $399.75 for one attorney in the configurator, so ask for the exact quote in writing and compare it with the number on screen.

A solo who litigates in one federal circuit may pay less than the all states figure. A solo doing mostly state court work should check whether the coverage they need is inside a single circuit selection at all.

What changes the Westlaw price?

Four inputs on the Thomson Reuters configurator move the number. The first is attorney count, selectable from one to ten online. The second is jurisdiction: all states and federal, one of the eleven numbered federal circuits, or the District of Columbia. The third is plan duration, one, two or three years. The fourth is the product itself, since Westlaw Advantage, a Westlaw bundle with CoCounsel Essentials and CoCounsel Essentials alone sit at different prices.

What the page does not show is what happens at renewal, whether usage is capped, or whether the multi-year price is protected against increases. Those are the three questions to put to the sales contact before you sign anything, and the answers belong in the written quote.

Is a three year Westlaw term worth it?

The page advertises 12 percent off for two years and 18 percent for three. The three year price works out to 18.75 percent below list, a flat discount that does not depend on negotiation. Over thirty six months a solo on the three year term commits to $16,122.60, against about $19,843 if the same product stayed at list for three years.

The discount is real, but it is also a lock. A three year commitment is a fixed cost whether your caseload grows or collapses, and the contract carries new features only for the initial term. Ask about the renewal price and the notice window before you sign, because the renewal is where list price usually returns.

What do other legal research tools cost compared with Westlaw?

Much less, in several cases, and some cost nothing extra. Many state bar associations include a Fastcase or vLex benefit with membership, which covers primary law for no added fee. The gap is the citator and the editorial layer, and that gap is what Westlaw sells. Our guide to legal research software for small firms prices the alternatives and explains why the citator decides the budget, and the legal research software comparison has the platform by platform table.

A practical split for a small firm is a bar benefit for retrieval, one citator, and an AI research tool used with every cite checked. That stack often totals less than a single Westlaw Advantage seat, but it only works if your partners accept a slower path on unfamiliar areas of law.

Can a firm bill Westlaw to the client?

A flat monthly subscription that serves every matter is generally overhead, and a firm cannot add a surcharge to it. ABA Formal Opinion 512 allows a per use charge for a generative AI tool on a specific matter to be passed through at actual cost, with disclosure. A fixed subscription that you use across your whole docket is a different thing. We cover the line in can law firms bill clients for AI tools. Your accountant will want it categorized as a recurring firm expense, and something like an expense tracker that reads receipts and tags subscriptions keeps a three year commitment from disappearing into the general ledger.

What does Westlaw not do for a small firm?

Westlaw finds and verifies law. It does not read your client file. The thirty hours between a new matter arriving and the first draft are spent on your own documents: the pleadings, the records, the correspondence, the dates. That work sits in case management, not in a research database, and it is priced separately. A firm paying $450 a month for one research seat can pay $149 a month for a flat firm plan on that side. See CaseAgent plans and pricing or the AI paralegal that builds the case file for what that covers.

For the research itself, an AI memo from any tool is a starting point. Every cited case should be pulled and read in a citator before it goes into a brief, and courts have sanctioned lawyers who skipped that step.

How to decide before you sign

Write down how many attorneys will actually research, which jurisdictions they file in, and how many hours a month each spends in a database. If the answer is under ten hours, a bar benefit plus a citator is probably enough. If your attorneys research daily across several states, the Westlaw Advantage price is justified by the hours saved, and the three year term is the cheaper way to hold it. Get the quote in writing, with the renewal price, before the discount clock starts.
