MyCase vs PracticePanther: Pricing and Features 2026

MyCase starts at about $39 per user per month and PracticePanther at about $49, and for most small firms those two numbers are not what decides it. MyCase is the simpler product with the better client portal and the faster setup, and it is the right call for a firm that wants case management working by Friday. PracticePanther is the more configurable product with deeper billing rules and stronger automation, and it wins for firms with repeatable workflows and unusual fee arrangements. Neither is a bad choice for a US firm under 20 people. Pick MyCase for simplicity, PracticePanther for control.

One disclosure first: we build Caseagent, an AI-native case management tool, so we compete in this category. Neither vendor pays us and there are no affiliate links here. Both platforms have thousands of US firms that renew every year, and this comparison is written to help you rule one out quickly rather than to sell you ours.

Try it before you read on

Run the live agent on a fictional sample matter: pick a case, pick a task, and watch it produce a case brief, a deadline timeline, or a drafted response.

Both products are legal practice management software aimed at the same buyer: US solos and firms up to roughly 20 timekeepers who want matters, documents, calendaring, time entry, invoicing, and IOLTA trust accounting in one login. Something like 80 percent of the feature lists overlap. The differences that matter are how much configuration the product expects from you, and how good it is at the two things small firms complain about most, which are getting paid and keeping clients informed.

Why firms pick MyCase

MyCase is the easier product to adopt, and adoption is the thing that actually decides whether practice management software pays for itself. A firm can sign up on Monday and be running matters, sending invoices, and messaging clients through the portal by the following week without a consultant. For a three-attorney general practice that has been running on Outlook, folders, and a spreadsheet, that speed is worth more than any feature comparison.

The client portal is genuinely the best part. Two-way messaging, document sharing, and online payment in one place your client will actually log into means fewer status calls and materially faster collections. Firms that turn on card and eCheck payment through the portal typically see invoices clear in days rather than weeks, and on a small practice that cash-flow change lands harder than a $10 per seat price difference. The lead management module rounds it out with intake forms, eSignature, and reporting on which sources convert.

The trade-off is ceiling. MyCase does not want you to build a complex configuration, so when your workflow gets genuinely complicated, an intake with conditional routing, a fee arrangement with different rates by matter type and timekeeper, you will find the edges. Most small firms never reach them. Some do within two years.

Why firms pick PracticePanther

PracticePanther is the choice when your firm has real rules. Custom hourly rates by user and by matter, retainer alerts that fire before a client runs dry, UTBMS coding for insurance defense and corporate clients that require it, and trust accounting positioned squarely at state bar compliance. If your billing is anything other than one rate for everyone, this is where the $10 difference stops being a difference.

The automation is the other reason. Rule-based workflows plus a broad Zapier catalog means repetitive processes can genuinely be built once and left alone: a new matter of a given type creates its task list, assigns the paralegal, sends the intake packet, and schedules the follow-up. That saves hours a week in a practice with repeatable case types. Firms with volume and predictable process, immigration, bankruptcy, and consumer practices in particular, get more from PracticePanther than from anything at this price.

The cost is time. Configurable software is only valuable if somebody configures it, and the firms that buy PracticePanther and never build the automations end up paying more for a product they use exactly like MyCase. Budget a real week of somebody's attention during rollout, and name that person before you sign. If nobody at the firm owns the rollout, buy the simpler product.

What each one actually costs a five-person firm

Five timekeepers on MyCase in the middle of the range at roughly $69 per user per month annually is about $4,100 a year. Five on PracticePanther Business at $89 is about $5,300. The gap is roughly $1,200 a year, which is between three and five billable hours. If PracticePanther's automation saves your paralegal an hour a week, it has paid for the difference several times over. If nobody builds the automation, you have spent $1,200 on nothing.

Add-ons move both numbers. MyCase sells its accounting module separately, PracticePanther's Business Pro tier sits near $114, and payment processing takes a cut on both. Our breakdown of what case management software really costs covers the line items vendors leave out of the comparison page.

One thing neither platform does for you: keeping the trust accounting defensible over time. Both handle three-way reconciliation, but the firm still owns the obligation, and in a practice where the bookkeeper is also the receptionist that obligation quietly slips. Small firms with a genuine compliance load usually end up with something outside the platform that tracks obligations and maps them to controls rather than trusting a monthly reminder.

Which should your firm choose

Choose MyCase if: you are a solo or a small general practice, nobody at the firm wants to be the software person, client communication is your biggest complaint, and you want to be running next week. It is the lowest-risk purchase in this category. If Clio is also on your shortlist, see our Clio vs MyCase comparison.

Choose PracticePanther if: your billing has rules, your case types repeat, you have somebody who will build the workflows, or you need UTBMS codes for institutional clients. The extra configuration pays for itself in a process-driven practice.

Choose neither if: you need heavy document automation or automatic time capture, in which case look at Smokeball, or you run high-volume contingency work, where the plaintiff-specific platforms fit better. Both cases are covered in the legal case management software comparison chart. The full alternatives lists are in MyCase alternatives and PracticePanther alternatives.

MyCase vs PracticePanther, common questions

Is MyCase cheaper than PracticePanther?

Yes at every comparable tier, by roughly $10 to $20 per user per month. MyCase starts near $39 and PracticePanther near $49 on annual billing. Across a five-person firm the annual difference is around $1,200, which is small enough that price should not be the deciding factor unless your margins are extremely tight.

Which is better for a solo attorney?

MyCase, in most cases. A solo has no one to build workflow automation and the highest value from a client portal that reduces phone interruptions. The exception is a solo running a high-volume repeatable practice such as bankruptcy or immigration, where PracticePanther's automation replaces the staff you have not hired yet.

Do both handle IOLTA trust accounting?

Both provide trust ledgers and three-way reconciliation adequate for typical state bar requirements. PracticePanther markets its compliance coverage more aggressively; MyCase sells a deeper accounting add-on separately. Whichever you choose, run one full month of reconciliation during the trial with your actual bank statement before you commit.

Can you migrate from MyCase to PracticePanther?

Yes. Both vendors run data migration services and will import contacts, matters, documents, and time entries from the other. What migrates poorly in either direction is workflow configuration, custom fields, and historical invoice formatting. Ask for a written scope of what will and will not come across before you agree to switch.

Which has better AI features?

Both have added AI assistants for drafting and summarizing inside the platform, and neither is a differentiator today. Both are assistants you invoke rather than agents that watch the matter, read a new filing, and work out what it requires. The distinction is covered in legal AI vs practice management software.

How long does implementation take?

MyCase is typically usable within a week and fully adopted in a month. PracticePanther takes longer if you use the automation as intended, commonly two to four weeks of configuration for a small firm. Both are far shorter than the enterprise platforms, where implementation is measured in months and priced in thousands.

A different category

Both platforms organize the work. Neither does it.

MyCase and PracticePanther are very good at matters, billing, and trust. Caseagent is a different category: an AI agent that lives inside the matter, reads new filings, researches case law with citations, drafts documents, and calendars every deadline it finds. It is pre-launch, in early access for US firms, and it does not replace your billing platform.
