Smokeball Pricing: Smokeball Cost per User, Plans, and What the Contract Locks In
Smokeball prints no US price. Its pricing page shows four plans with a "Get pricing" button on each, and the directory figures you will find elsewhere come from a test page or from 2023. What does decide your bill is published, in Smokeball's terms of service: a fixed per user fee you cannot cancel, seats you cannot reduce until renewal, and an automatic renewal at "then standard pricing".
Put your quote into the worksheet to see what you are committing to, what a headcount drop would strand, and the date you have to give notice by.

Smokeball pricing is quote only in the US
Smokeball does not publish what it costs in the United States. Its own FAQ answers "How much does Smokeball cost?" by saying the price depends on the number of users at your firm, your selected plan, your contract term, and any optional products or services. The last time a visitor could see a US figure was a May 2023 capture of the page: Start at $29, Grow from $99 and Prosper from $149 per user per month on a 36 month term.
The numbers that matter more than the rate are in the contract. Smokeball's terms of service, last updated 07/09/2026, make the fee fixed and non-cancellable for the whole term, forbid reducing users until renewal, put every user on the same plan, bill onboarding separately, and renew automatically for 12 months at then standard pricing unless you give 30 days notice. A per user rate means little until you know those five things.

What Smokeball's own pricing page says, word for word
The page opens with "Four plans. One platform." and says every plan includes onboarding, bank grade data security, and a local team who picks up the phone. Then each of the four plan cards ends in the same button, "Get pricing". There is no dollar amount anywhere on the page.
The pricing FAQ
"Depends on the number of users"
Users, plan, contract term and optional products or services. Firms "can request a personalized, no-obligation quote". Four variables and no published starting point means your quote is the only number in play.
Migration
"Confirmed in your quote"
Data migration is available for firms moving from another system, and "any migration services and related costs will be confirmed in your quote." Ask for it as a separate line with a fixed scope.
The comparison page
"Transparent pricing"
Smokeball's Smokeball vs Clio page describes its own pricing model as "Transparent pricing with all core features included" and Clio's as a lower entry price with upsells. It makes that claim while printing no US price.
Smokeball, Inc. launched in Chicago in 2013 and is headquartered at 200 W Adams Street. The pricing page says it is trusted by 34,000+ legal professionals worldwide. Quote based selling is common among US practice management platforms sold to firms with several staff; our Filevine pricing breakdown shows the same pattern at the personal injury end of the market.
What each tier adds, from the plan cards
Smokeball plans: Bill, Boost, Grow and Prosper+
Each plan includes everything in the one before it. The line that matters for price is the add-on column, because an add-on on Grow is often an included feature on Prosper+, and every add-on is another number on your quote.
| Plan | Smokeball's description | Adds | Add-ons listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bill | A legal billing solution for expenses, trust accounting and payments | Invoicing, time and expense tracking, online payments, trust accounting and reporting, accounting integrations | None listed |
| Boost | Browser based case management | Client and matter management, tasks and calendar, Microsoft 365 Outlook and Word integration, client portal, eSignature, eFiling, Communicate powered by Smokeball AI | Intake, Archie AI assistant |
| Grow (marked Best Value) | Includes the native desktop application, for firms with three or more staff | Practice area templates and calculators, advanced document automation, automated forms, email management, web app | Archie AI assistant, AutoTime, FamilyPro, Intake, Workflows |
| Prosper+ | An all-in-one firm management platform | Firm insights, lead management and inquiry intake, custom workflows, staff activity and profitability reporting. AutoTime, Intake and Workflows included | Archie AI assistant, FamilyPro |
The comparison table on the same page marks email marketing, eFiling and online payments as "Fees apply", and time tracking as manual on Bill, Boost and Grow and automatic only on Prosper+. Smokeball Payments has no monthly fee but charges a percentage plus a flat fee per transaction, and the page does not print either figure. Two practical notes: the terms say that unless your order form says otherwise, your tier is Prosper+, so check which plan is actually written on it; and Grow's desktop application is the part that needs Windows, which we cover on our legal software for Mac page.

Every Smokeball price you have seen, and where it really came from
Search for Smokeball pricing and you get $29, $49, $89, $99, $139, $149 and $169, often on the same results page. Almost all of them are real numbers from somewhere. Very few of them are Smokeball's current US price, and one of them was never shown to a visitor at all.
| Figure you will see | Where it came from | Is it today's US price? |
|---|---|---|
| Start $29, Grow $119, Prosper $169 | smokeball.com/pricing, May 2022 to May 2023, the one year option, per user per month | No. Retired plan names; onboarding and data migration excluded even then |
| Grow $99, Prosper $149 | The same page, 3 year option, footnoted "3 year Financed Agreement". Last visible on 11 May 2023 | No. Gone from view by December 2023 |
| "From $149/mo" on every plan | Placeholder text left in the page code from December 2023 onward, on all four cards. The site's stylesheet hides it, so visitors never saw it | No. Scraped from hidden markup |
| Bill $49, Boost from $89 | A separate smokeball.com/pricing-2025 page captured in April 2025, now redirected to /pricing. The figures appear in none of the 19 captures of the real pricing page since December 2023. Capterra, Software Advice and GetApp all show $49 and $89 | Unconfirmed. Never on the live US pricing page |
| Bill 59, Boost 129, Grow 249 | smokeball.com.au/pricing today, "per user", "Price excludes GST", Australian site. AutoTime is a 39 add-on there; Prosper+ is custom priced | No. Australian pricing, not US dollars |
| $139 per user | Third party review blogs, with no source given | No match to anything Smokeball has published |
What the history does tell you is useful. When Smokeball priced in public, the three year financed term was $20 a user a month cheaper than the one year term on both Grow and Prosper, and the Start plan was the same price either way. Term length has been a real lever on Smokeball's price, which is exactly why the non-cancellable clause in Exhibit D deserves attention before you take the longer term for the discount.

The six contract clauses that decide what Smokeball really costs
No review site covers these, and they move the total more than a few dollars on the per user rate. Each is quoted from smokeball.com/terms.
01 · No exit mid term
Fixed and non-cancellable
The fee "is not refundable, cancellable, or avoidable", including for a "change of mind" or if you "reduce or cease Your use". Neither party can terminate without cause during the term. The term length itself is whatever your order form says.
02 · Seats only go up
Users cannot be reduced until renewal
The number of users "cannot be decreased below the number of Users listed on Your Client Order Form during the Subscription Term, whether the Users are active or not." Users you add are coterminous, contracted through the end of the term.
03 · One tier for everyone
No mixed plans
"Your Users cannot be segmented into different Subscription Tiers." An upgrade applies to all users, and a downgrade is "not allowed within a Subscription Term, even if You upgraded Your Tier previously". Your receptionist pays the Prosper+ rate if your partners need Prosper+.
04 · Automatic renewal
12 months at then standard pricing
Miss the notice window of at least 30 days before the end date and the subscription "will automatically renew as a 12-month subscription ... at Smokeball's then standard pricing". Smokeball gives at least 60 days notice of an increase. Put the notice date in the calendar on signing day.
05 · Separate fees
Onboarding is its own line
Onboarding Fees are "separate and apart from the total monthly Subscription Fee" and listed on the order form. Migration is confirmed in the quote. Flex Users, month to month seats, cost "higher than the then-current monthly fee".
06 · Leaving
Thirty days to get your data
After the term ends Smokeball grants access "for thirty (30) days ... for the sole purpose of permitting You to retrieve Your data." Plan the export before the end date, not after it.
For contrast, Clio's own pricing FAQ says you can cancel at any time and the cancellation takes effect at the end of your current monthly or annual term. The terms also mention promotional discounts on annual services and discounts through bar association partnerships, so ask whether your state or local bar has one before you negotiate.

Smokeball vs the platforms that do publish a US price
You cannot hold Smokeball to a number it will not print. You can walk into the call with what its competitors print in public, read on their own pricing pages rather than a directory.
| Platform | Per user per month | Trial | Notes from the page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smokeball | Not published | Not mentioned on the US page | Four plans, all "Get pricing". Fixed, non-cancellable term |
| Clio | From $49 | Marketed, length not stated | Only Starter is priced; Core, Signature and Elite are "Get pricing". Cancel any time, effective at the end of the current term |
| MyCase | $50 / $100 / $130 | 10 days, no credit card | Basic, Pro, Advanced billed annually; $60, $120 and $150 month to month. MyCase Accounting is $39 per user extra |
| PracticePanther | $49 / $69 / $89 / $114 | Free trial | Solo, Essential, Business, Business Pro billed annually; $59, $79, $99 and $124 monthly |
| CosmoLex | $49 / $99 / $129 | Free trial | Launch, Core, Pro on yearly billing; accounting built in |
Clio says you can cancel at the end of the current term, and MyCase and PracticePanther sell month to month plans; Smokeball's standard terms fix both the fee and the seat count for the whole term. That flexibility is worth money even if the quoted rates land in the same range. For the feature side of the decision, our Smokeball vs Clio comparison and the wider Smokeball alternatives shortlist go vendor by vendor.
How to make the quote comparable
Five things to get written into a Smokeball order form
01
The tier, by name
The default in the terms is Prosper+. If you are buying Grow, it has to say Grow.
02
The minimum user count
Sign for the headcount you are sure of. You can add users at any time; you cannot remove them.
03
Every add-on priced
Archie AI, AutoTime, Intake, Workflows, FamilyPro, eFiling and payment fees, each on its own line.
04
Onboarding and migration
A fixed fee and a written scope: which data, how many years, who checks the trust balances.
05
A renewal cap
"Then standard pricing" has no ceiling. A percentage cap is easy to ask for before signing and hard after.
Answered first, then explained
Smokeball pricing questions buyers actually ask
How much does Smokeball cost?
Smokeball does not publish a US price. Its pricing page shows four plans, Bill, Boost, Grow and Prosper+, each with a "Get pricing" button, and its FAQ says the cost depends on the number of users, the plan, the contract term and any optional products. The last US prices it displayed, in May 2023, were $29, $99 and $149 per user per month on a 36 month term.
Is Smokeball priced per user?
Yes. Smokeball's terms of service charge Subscription Fees per User, fixed for the Subscription Term. All users must be on the same plan, because the terms say users cannot be segmented into different subscription tiers, so a firm cannot put its billing clerk on Bill and its attorneys on Prosper+.
Can I cancel my Smokeball subscription?
Not during the term without cause. Smokeball's terms say the subscription fee is fixed for the entire term and is not refundable or cancellable, including for a change of mind, and neither side can terminate without cause. To leave at the end, you must give notice at least 30 days before the end date or it renews automatically.
Does Smokeball auto renew?
Yes. If you do not tell Smokeball at least 30 days before the end date, the terms say the subscription automatically renews as a 12 month subscription, invoiced monthly, at Smokeball's then standard pricing. Smokeball must give at least 60 days notice of a fee increase before a new term starts.
Can I reduce the number of Smokeball users mid contract?
No. The terms say the number of users cannot be decreased below the number on your order form during the term, whether the users are active or not, and can only be reduced at renewal. Users added mid term are contracted through the end of the same term.
Does Smokeball have a free trial?
Not on the current US pricing page, which no longer mentions one. Earlier versions offered a 7 day trial of Start in 2022 and a 30 day trial of Boost from late 2023. Smokeball Australia still advertises a free trial of Boost. In the US, ask for a trial in writing before you sign.
Is Smokeball cheaper than Clio?
Public prices cannot settle it. Clio publishes one number, a Starter plan from $49 per user per month, and quotes its Core, Signature and Elite plans. Smokeball publishes no US number at all. Compare written quotes for the same seat count and term, and include onboarding and migration fees, which both vendors price separately.
Does Smokeball charge an onboarding fee?
Yes, separately. The terms define Onboarding Fees as additional training and services fees detailed on the order form and separate from the monthly subscription fee, and the pricing FAQ says migration services and related costs are confirmed in your quote.
Is AutoTime included in Smokeball?
Only in Prosper+. Smokeball's pricing FAQ says AutoTime, its automatic time and activity tracking, is included with Prosper+ and that Grow users can buy it as an add on. Bill and Boost track time manually. Intake and Workflows follow the same pattern: included in Prosper+, add ons below it.
Does Smokeball work on a Mac?
Only the browser based plan avoids the question. Boost is described as fully browser based, but Grow includes Smokeball's native desktop application, and Smokeball's support hub lists Mac OS as unsupported for it and requires Windows 11 and Office 365 installed locally. A Mac firm on Grow or Prosper+ needs Windows in a virtual machine or a hosted desktop.
Priced per firm, not per user, with the matter work built in
Caseagent puts an AI agent inside each matter: it reads the file, drafts from the record with citations back to the page, and keeps the deadlines current when a date moves. Plans are flat per firm: Solo $149 a month for one attorney, Firm $399 for up to 5 users and Practice $899 for up to 15, so a new hire inside your plan never changes the bill.
